BJP to end Jat stronghold in Haryana?

The Bharatiya Janata Party which emerged victorious in the Haryana Assembly elections made massive gains in the north and southern parts of the State. It won most of its seats from the districts of Ambala, Kurukshetra, Panchkula, Karnal and Panipat along the arterial GT road as also from the southern districts of Mahendragarh, Rewari, Gurgaon and Faridabad. The party made a dent in the Jat strongholds of Jind, Bhiwani and Hissar.

It swept all nine Assembly segments of the Ambala Lok Sabha constituency and has won from eight out of nine segments in the Karnal Lok Sabha constituency. Even in the Congress stronghold of Rohtak, the party won four of eight seats. The Congress success was confined to the Sonepat, Jhajjar and Rohtak areas where Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda had brought in unprecedented development in the last 10 years. The party has also retained a small presence in Bhiwani, Palwal and Kaithal.

The Indian National Lok Dal led by Om Prakash Chautala held on to its traditional areas in the Sirsa, Hissar and Fatehabad belts and has some presence left in Bhiwani and Jind as well. Its earlier presence in the Jat belt of Jind, Kaithal and Sonepat now stands diminished in the face of the BJP onslaught.
