A US court has issued summons against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his role as the Gujarat chief minister during 2002 riots, a daily reported on Friday.

The PM will arrive in the US today after a nine-year visa ban.

The summons were issued by the Federal Court of Southern District of New York.

The lawsuit, filed by the American Justice Center (AJC), a non-profit human rights organisation identified among the plaintiffs “two survivors of the horrific and organised violence of Gujarat 2002”, and called for a response from Modi on the basis of the Alien Tort Claims Act (ATCA) and the Torture Victim Protection Act (TVPA), reported the daily.

As per Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, whose law firm represents the plaintiffs, the summons requires Modi to give a response within 21 days after it is served.
