Mamata says she is not against left ideology

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said she was ready to form an alliance with the Left to keep the BJP at bay. During an interview to a television channel she said : “No one is politically untouchable. If opportunity comes, we will consider it (alliance with the Left). The alliance must be pro-development and pro-people. The proposal must come to us. We will take it up in our party meeting.’’ In response, Mohammad Selim, CPI-M MP, said Miss Banerjee needed to spell out her party's stand on the BJP, the Maoists who killed “our party members” and other issues before his party could consider her proposal.

Miss Banerjee welcomed the RJD-JD(U) alliance which defeated the BJP in the Bihar bypoll. When pointed out that some had sarcastically said she was “the best student of the Leftists”, she said: “I am always receptive to ideas. If there is a good policy, I will surely imbibe it. I have always said I am not against Leftist ideology. I am against opportunist Leftists. So many of my party colleagues are Leftists. There is nothing wrong in that.” Miss Banerjee said she was not averse to constructive criticism and wasn’t worried about the BJP’s rise.
