India sees the Pakistan High Commissioner’s meeting with Kashmiri separatist leaders as interference in India’s internal affairs. Separatist leaders say the meeting was a step towards solving the Kashmir dispute, which they describe as an international issue. Pakistan has, in its turn, slammed India for backtracking from its commitment of talks for no reason.

In response, Pakistan’s Foreign Office said that “it is a long standing practice” to hold meetings with Kashmiri leaders ahead of bilateral talks in order to “facilitate meaningful discussions on the issue of Kashmir”
