Even as demand for 'Bharat Ratnas' for a procession of personalities from the past spiralled, government sources indicated that there was no move yet to confer country's highest civilian honour before the Republic Day on January 26.

"Bharat Ratna and Padma awards have traditionally been awarded around Republic Day," a senior government source pointed out amid furious speculation that the NDA government could be planning to honour former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Hindu nationalist leader Madan Mohan Malviya and BSP founder Kanshi Ram.
