Nation at 9: Ignored by Congress, awarded by Narendra Modi?
The Indian government is considering bestowing the country's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, on five icons — pre-independence hero Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) founder Kanshi Ram, India's first home minister Sardar Vallabhai Patel and Banaras Hindu University founder Madan Mohan Malviya, sources said.

Out of them, only Vajpayee, who was the Indian premier from 1999 to 2004, is alive.

According to the sources, the BJP government may make the announcement next week, before India celebrates its Independence Day on August 15.

The BJP has been for long demanding the Bharat Ratna for Vajpayee, who became the first person from the party to occupy the top post of the country. And, during his election campaign, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also highlighted how successive governments had neglected Vajpayee and Dalit leader Kanshi Ram while considering the honour.
