Cabinet briefing on Inflation

In an effort to tackle rising inflation, the government on Wednesday brought onions and potatoes under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, for one year. The decision taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs will prevent hoarding as it will place an upper limit on holding stock of these two vegetables by wholesale traders and others. "Despite adequate availability, there has been an increase in prices of onions and potatoes. There have been also complaints of hoarding", law and telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said after the cabinet briefing explaining the government decision.
