A 22-year-old human rights activist was allegedly manhandled by an auto rickshaw driver in public after she tried to click a photograph of his licence plate for demanding Rs 150 for a two-km ride.

Namitha (name changed to protect identity), a native of Delhi, who works in a NGO in the city, was accompanied by a male friend when they tried hailing a rickshaw to Garuda Mall from Nanjappa Circle in Shanthinagar around 9.30 pm on Tuesday.

"We stopped a passing auto (KA-02-AD-450) and asked him to take us to the mall, which is barely a distance of two kilometres, but he quoted Rs 150 for the ride. We even agreed to pay one-and-a-half times on the meter, but he shook his head and started to drive off. I went close and took a snap of his licence plate and that's when it turned ugly," said Namitha, speaking to Bangalore Mirror.
