BJP: Congress government had already hiked fares
  • 5 years ago
Slamming the government for a steep hike in rail fares, opposition parties on Friday said it was "criminal" to burden people with such an increase and questioned why Parliament was not taken into confidence before taking the step.

They questioned the relevance of taking such a decision when the budget session has already been announced and demanded an immediate rollback, even as BJP defended the hike saying the government was only implementing a policy that was initiated by the previous UPA government.

Taking potshots at BJP's poll slogan of "good days are to come," Congress general secretary Ajay Maken said the "gift" by the Narendra Modi government would put an additional burden on the middle class, lower middle class and the poor. He referred to Modi's tweet on March 7, 2012 against UPA's government's hike in railway fares.
