India Debates: Who's to blame for Congress meltdown?

The Congress is perfecting the art of losing its cake and imagining it too. Thus, even as it rubbishes opinion polls showing the Congress is going to lose, it is ringfencing its leader Rahul Gandhi from its consequences.

Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi poked fun at the 'miniscule' sample sizes used by the exit pollsters and pointed out that they had got it completely wrong in the past as well. Digvijaya Singh said, "In a country of 800 million voters how can a few lakh sample size surveys predict (the) result? Let's wait for 16 May". Yet - and almost as a reflex action - the party has been rushing to shield Rahul Gandhi from any blame. Urban development minister Kamal Nath was one of those who firmly rejected suggestions that a likely poor show in the elections will be a reflection on Rahul's leadership, saying he was never a part of the UPA government. Instead he said that any potential defeat was a result of the failure by the Manmohan Singh-led government to convey its programmes and all the good work it was doing.
