Sonia Gandhi appeals to Muslims for votes
  • 5 years ago
A controversy has erupted over Congress President Sonia Gandhi's meeting with Shahi Imam Bukhari. The Bharatiya Janata Party has now approached the Election Commission asking it to take cognisance of Sonia Gandhi's reported appeal to Muslims against splitting their votes.

After the meeting with Bukhari on Tuesday, Sonia Gandhi, who filed her nomination from Raebareli on Wednesday, called on some Muslim clerics there. Sonia Gandhi, when asked about the meeting with Bukhari, defended it and said, "We are not in the game or business of polarisation."

Calling BJP's allegations a 'joke', Sonia said, "It's a joke. I can't say more than that. We are not in the habit of or in the game of polarising the elections." "It's a tradition from Feroze Gandhi's time and Indira Gandhi's time," she added.
