Uma Bharati refused to bow to the BJP leadership's diktat to contest against Sonia Gandhi in the latter's pocket borough Rae Bareli, forcing the party to opt for Supreme Court lawyer Ajay Agarwal as its candidate against the Congress president in a choice made late on Monday.

However, BJP was able to persuade TV actor and party vice-president Smriti Irani to fight against Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi in Amethi. Aam Aadmi Party leader Kumar Vishwas is the other high-profile contestant in the fray from the seat.
