Supreme Court pulls up Akhilesh government over the Muzaffarnagar riots
  • 5 years ago
The Supreme Court on Wednesday indicted the UPA as well as Akhilesh Yadav-led Uttar Pradesh governments for "negligence" in the Muzaffarnagar riots.

A bench led by Chief Justice P Sathasivam said there was an evident failure by the central and state intelligence agencies in taking steps to prevent riots and maintain communal harmony in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining districts where riots claimed many lives. It said that had the governments preempted the problem, unfortunate events could certainly be nipped in the bud.

The bench, however, said there was no need to handover the probe to the CBI or set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) "at this stage" in view of the steps taken and promised by the state government.
