Varanasi has become a multi-cornered battle with all parties looking to score points. For Narendra Modi the choice of Varanasi is also symbolic in nature which indicates that the party may not have completely abandoned the Hindutva ideology.

Congress is focussing on a Brahmin candidate against Modi's candidature from Varanasi and is also considering local candidate Ajay Rai, who has a loyal vote bank of more than 1 lakh votes. In 2004, Congress won the Varanasi seat In 2009, however, Rajesh Kumar Mishra fell to fourth position behind BJP's Murli Manohar Joshi, with then SP candidate Ajay Rai securing the third spot.
