Party has vetoed Murli Manohar Joshi's claim on Varanasi seat

he Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) lingering indecision over nominating Narendra Modi, its prime ministerial aspirant, from Varanasi constituency at the coming general election may be about to end.

Two days ahead of a crucial meeting of the party's central election committee (CEC), the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the BJP's ideological parent, has signalled its backing of Modi's candidature from the holy town.

At present, it is represented by former BJP president Murli Manohar Joshi, who has indicated his reluctance to relocate.
Anxious to sort out the differences and put up a united face, RSS leaders have spoken to Joshi and requested him to vacate Varanasi for Modi and contest from another constituency. Senior leaders of the RSS are of the view that the final decision should be taken collectively by the BJP leadership.

"Senior leaders of the RSS have spoken to Joshi to consider contesting from another seat in Uttar Pradesh. RSS leaders are of the opinion that BJP should take all decisions collectively and the party must not give an impression to its cadre that there are differences between senior leaders," said a senior leader aware of the development. The BJP is likely to take a final decision on Thursday when the CEC is scheduled to announce the names of candidates.
