Narendra Modi's first meeting with US envoy after 2002 Gujarat riots
  • 5 years ago
US Ambassador to India Nancy Powell on Thursday met Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who is the front-runner to be the country's next prime minister, a signal that Washington was ending a long boycott of him over post-Godhra violence in 2002.
Ambassador Powell met Narendra Modi in Gandhinagar. Television footage showed her shaking Modi's hand and smiling, while he gave her a bunch of red and yellow flowers.
Powell and her entourage later left Modi's residence in the state capital Gandhinagar, after the meeting lasting almost an hour, but she did not speak to waiting reporters.
The two are believed to have spoken about strengthening business and economic relations.
