Mumbai police commissioner Satyapal Singh has resigned from his post, amid speculations of him entering electoral politics. Singh, a Maharashtra cadre IPS officer of the 1980 batch, was due to retire in 2015.

"I have sent my resignation, now the government will take a decision. I used to work for the Mumbai Police, now with renewed energy I want to work for the social harmony, national reconstruction and world peace," he said on Thursday.

Singh is the first Mumbai police commissioner to quit.
