The Samajwadi Party government's claim that it has cracked down against the illegal sand mining proved hollow when its own leader was booked for killing a farmer who was opposing the rampant mining on the Gomti river's banks in Lucknow and Barabanki. It now remains to be seen what action Akhilesh government would take against the district and police officials who not only failed to check illegal mining in Barabanki but also allegedly extended patronage to the mining mafia.
