Delhi University professor GN Saibaba gets life imprisonment for connection with maoists

A sessions court in Maharashtra on Tuesday sentenced the Delhi University professor GN Saibaba and five others for Maoist links and for “waging war” against the country. The Gadchiroli sessions court sentenced Saibaba and five others to life imprisonment under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. GN Saibaba was arrested in May 2014 after his links with Maoists. He was granted bail in April last year on medical grounds. Granting bail to Saibaba, the court had said his release would be subject to the conditions by the trial court as he would make himself available as and when he was required. Shocked by the court’s decision, the family of GN Saibaba said, “It is shocking,” Vasantha Saibaba, his wife, told Scroll.in. “There is barely any evidence against him – the trial proved this. We will definitely challenge the verdict.” The wheelchair-bound professor suffers from serious heart ailment and needs help for basic tasks like eating food.
