Congress leaders's efforts to consolidate their position in this vokkaliga heartland seems to have yielded results with large turn out of people at the "thanks giving' rally addressed by none other than their party supremo Sonia Gandhi at the sprawling Sir M Vishveshwaraiah sports stadium.
Sonia Gandhi strongly backed PM Manmohan Singh.
At one point of time even Sonia Gandhi herself turned emotional and raised the pitch of her speech to defend the party, government and the prime minister Manmohan Singh. Even many of the Congress leaders never believed that people will turn out in huge numbers for the today's rally, particularly in a place like Mandya considered to be a JDS home ground and stronghold. On the peoples front also crowd turned ecstatic particularly when Sonia Gandhi started and ended her speech in Kannada.
