In an attempt to firewall convicted legislators, the union cabinet is all set to consider an ordinance seeking to reverse the Supreme Court judgment to disqualify the convicted MPs and MLAs.
This after the government failed to get a bill to this effect passed in the parliament. The ordinance will allow convicted MPs and MLAs to continue in office, if the appeal against the conviction is admitted by a higher court within 90 days. Though the netas won't draw any salary and votes pending the appeal.
Sources are telling NewsX that the government has weighed its options on bringing an ordinance in this regard to safeguard Congress MP Rashid Masood who is convicted in a corruption case and other offences. Remember, if the apex court ruling is followed, Masood may be the first MP to lose his Rajya Sabha seat.
The ordinance, if passed, may also spell respite for RJD chief Lalu Prasad yadav who is accused in the fodder scam the verdict of which is due end September.
