NewsX: Historic judgment by the Supreme Court. SC holds section 8(4) of the Representation of people's act as ultra vires to the Constitution.
Court holds that from now on the MPs and MLAs shall stand disqualified to hold the membership of the house on the date of first conviction and they shall not get three months time to file the appeal.
Also, politicians can no more contest elections when serving a jail sentence, if they are convicted in a case that awards them imprisonment for 2 years or more.
