Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will meet soon for exploratory talks for an alliance ahead of the Assembly polls in the State later this year, according to Congress sources. “We want to defeat the BJP but at the same time, we also want to ensure our own existence,” State Congress president Ashok Choudhary, who discussed the matter with Mr. Gandhi on Saturday, told the reporters. Asked who would be the chief ministerial candidate of the alliance, Mr. Choudhary said: “Nitish Kumar has been a good chief minister and has strong mass appeal.” Mr. Prasad has stopped short of endorsing Mr. Kumar’s candidature so far, though he has stated that none from his family would be an aspirant for the Chief Minister’s post.
