Modi to amend the Lokayukta Act

Modi has taken the Gujarat Governor Kamla Beniwal head on the Lokayukta Act. He has tabled a bill to amend the Lokayukta Act which curtails the powers of the Governor in the appointment of the Lokayukta. The Governor would be left with no choice than to sign unless he wants to take Modi by the horn. According to the bill, now a government appointed panel would take a final decision on the Lokayukta. Beniwal had earlier appointed Lokayukta Justice R A Mehta, without consulting the chief minister. Event the Supreme Court had upheld the appointment. But the opposition says, while a curative petition is pending with the Apex Court, this bill should not be considered.
