SC takes suo motu notice of police brutality in Patna, Punjab

Big twist to the Punjab police brutality case against a woman first reported by NewsX. After the attack comes humiliation with Punjab IG'S initial report to the Home Ministry silent over registering an FIR and merely recommends the holding a departmental inquiry. The report clearly indicates that the Punjab police is all set to defend the cops and that a departmental enquiry means that no criminal action can be initiated against them.The girl's family has alleged cover up of the incident especially with the SC/ST commission's demand for registering an FIR against the cops being ignored. Meanwhile, NEWSX report on the police assault against women has evoked response with Supreme Court taking suo motu cognisance of two instances. Based on media reports on the assault of women teachers in Patna and the attack on a woman at Taran Taaran in Punjab, the Supreme Court has issued notice to the Home Secretaries of both Punjab and Bihar returnable in four days. The case is set to come up for hearing on Monday.
