Jailbreak in Jharkhand: 5 prisoners shot dead, over 15 manage to escape

Five undertrial prisoners were reportedly killed in police firing in West Singhbhum district on Tuesday when over 20 undertrails tried to escape from Chaibasa divisional jail, 150km from here, around 4pm.

Over 15 prisoners including some hardcore Maoists are reported to have escaped from the jail. All exit points in the district have been sealed and police have launched a manhunt to nab them.

Kolhan DIG Md Nehal said, "Till now, I have information that two prisoners have been killed. The exact number will be known only after verification. A verification is going on," he added. The policemen opened fire on the prisoners trying to escape from the jail when they failed to catch them.

The two killed prisoners have been identified as hardcore Maoist Tipa Das and Ram Vilas Tati.

A high alert has been sounded at all jails situated across Jharkhand. "The profiles of the prisoners can be known only after verification. It is a mixed group involving Maoists and criminals," said Nehal.

A total of 51 prisoners had been taken to the court in a police van in the morning and escorted back to the jail campus in the same van. The van entered the jail campus and prisoners were being put back inside the jail when some of them allegedly threw chilly power in the eyes of the policemen escorting them and escaped.

The cops opened the main entrance gate of the jail (the main jail campus where prisoners stay) and asked prisoners to come out from the vehicle and go inside the jail.

Some of them went inside the main jail campus but a few manhandled the policemen and reportedly threw chilly power in a bid to escape. It caused panic among the policemen and over 15 prisoners took advantage of it and escaped.

Police have ruled out involvement of Maoists in the jailbreak because the van had safely come inside the jail campus before the incident.

"Prima facie the incident seems to have taken place due to carelessness on the part of the jail authorities. There is no involvement of Maoists," said a police officer.

"The local reports are saying that over 15 prisoners have escaped. The incident has taken place just now. Let us verify the details," said Nehal.

DGP Rajiv Kumar has ordered a probe into the incident.
