Former Rajya Sabha MP Banwari Lal Kanchhal was beaten black and blue by a group of lawyers on the sessions court premises on Friday afternoon. The lawyers tore off 68-year-old Kanchhal's clothes in full public view and left him scurrying for cover.

It all started when Kanchhal, a prominent traders' leader, came to the court for hearing in a case involving alleged encroachment by lawyers in Aminabad. After emerging from the court, he had barely walked a few meters when a group of lawyers surrounded him. Before Kanchhal could speak, one of the lawyers pushed him. Soon, it became a free-for-all and the lawyers allegedly started kicking and pushing him around. When Kanchhal tried to flee, the lawyers chased him and ripped away his clothes. The windscreen of his car was also smashed. Kanchhal alleged that the lawyers snatched away his mobile phone and a gold chain too.

SO of Wazirganj police station Abhinav Singh Pundher said, "Eight people including Ajay Yadav, Ashok Singh Tomar, Shashikant Bajpai, Sharad Kumar Chuadhary, Manoj Singh, Dhanraj Bajpai, Janardhan Bajpai and Shamit Gupta were booked under various IPC sections in connection with the case."
