Fifteen elderly patients lost their vision after undergoing cataract operation in an eye camp conducted by a non-government organisation (NGO) last month.

The local administration came to know about the shocking incident only on Wednesday when the patients were brought to Amritsar deputy commissioner Ravi Bhagat by another NGO, the Kisan Sangharsh Samiti, after they complained of loss of sight days after the surgery in November.Bhagat referred them to the Government Eye Hospital, where specialists found to their horror that all 15 had lost their vision due to a severe post-operation infection.

“All 15 patients, including seven women, have gone completely blind due to the severe infection and there is no chance of their sight getting restored,” Amritsar civil surgeon Rajiv Bhalla told Hindustan Times on Thursday night. “We have no clue on the NGO that organised the eye camp as neither I nor my Gurdaspur counterpart gave any permission to hold this camp,” he said.

The patients are aged above 60 years and belong to Gagomahal village in Ajnala, about 40 km from here. Mostly housewives or daily wagers, they felt shattered little knowing that they have lost their vision forever.

The Amritsar deputy commissioner said that the surgeries were done at Guru Nanak Charitable Hospital, Ghuman, in Gurdaspur district.

Huddled in a cramped ward, Shinder Kaur, 65, from Gagomahal said, “I cannot believe what has happened to us. Soon after the surgery, I felt something was amiss. I couldn’t see at all.”

Pooro, 70, from Vidhi Chinna village said, “We are poor people and totally dependent on such camps for treatment. But it has left me blind. We want compensation and punishment to those who caused this.”

Earlier, chief minister Parkash Singh Badal ordered a probe and asked the state principal secretary of health Vinni Mahajan to personally conduct an inquiry into all the aspects of the unfortunate incident. The health ministry too has sought report from the state government.
