Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi draws thousands to Sydney Olympic Park

The energy and colour of an Indian political rally came to Sydney on Monday when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed thousands of admirers at Sydney Olympic Park.

In a speech filled with Mr Modi's trade mark stirring rhetoric he underscored India and Australia's "shared values", especially their strong democratic traditions.

"Without democracy do you think I would be here?" he said.

In a wide-ranging speech that lasted about an hour, Mr Modi spoke at length about his government's plans for economic development in India.

He said he wanted to boost tourism to India and announced changes that will allow Australians to get a visa on arrival in India.

The sellout crowd at Allphones Arena welcomed the Indian leader as they would a rock star.
