Sheila Dikshit quits active politics for party work

For the first time, former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit has ruled out contesting in the Assembly elections in the national capital. On Tuesday, Ms Dikshit said she would no longer participate in active politics, instead would work relentlessly for the Congress party.
On President Pranab Mukherjee’s nod to lieutenant-governor Najeeb Jung’s proposal that the BJP be asked to form the government, Ms Dikshit said, “The President is advised by those who have the ground report. There have to be numbers to form the government. If the BJP has numbers, it should go ahead to form the government.” However, Ms Dikshit was quick to add that senior BJP leader and Union urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu had himself said that his party does not believe in horse-trading. She said the BJP had earlier rejected the L-G’s offer to stake claim to form the government. “The party and its allies had won 32 seats in the 70-member Assembly. After three of its members got elected to the Lok Sabha, the BJP is left with only 29 legislators. How they are going to form the government, only they can answer.”
Keeping in view the current political scenario, Ms Dikshit said, “It does not look that any party is in a position to form government in Delhi.”
“The AAP, which had won just 28 seats, could form the government only after the Congress extended its support in writing to the L-G.”
The former chief minister said that being the single largest party does not mean one can form the government. “What is required for government formation is that one has to be a majority party.”
Ms Dikshit was also critical about the President’s Rule in the city, saying, “All the developmental works have come to a standstill.” She also termed the Trilokpuri riots as an “unnatural situation.” “Many people told me that they cannot understand what was going on... I do not know whether RSS or any other group is behind these riots. I hope the BJP does not polarise voters before elections are held in Delhi.”
