Mumbai is set to witness a massive protest by hawkers. Azad Hawkers' Union has called for a strike today to protest against the alleged injustice meted out to them by the police and the Mumbai civic authorities the BMC. The union claims that the police department and the BMC together extort almost Rs1,000 crore from hawkers to allow them to do business. The Union has strength of more than 1.25 lakh hawkers in the city, and more than 50 thousand of them threaten to take to the streets.
