NewsX exposes the deadly corruption of clinical trials

NewsX's Special Investigation reveals the sickening reality of how thousands of India's poorest and most vulnerable citizens are being exploited by foreign pharma companies in cahoots with their local agents and officials. A two-judge bench ordered the govt to stop these "rackets" and ordered that all drug trials must now be supervised by the Union health secretary. After over 2,000 deaths during clinical drug trials in last five years, the government plans to regulate the $500 million sector. Reports say changed drug laws are on the anvil to make lapses by pharma MNCs a punishable offence and enhance compensation among other steps. Sources say rules meant to monitor clinical trials under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act would be notified within this month. After notifying these rules, which will lay down guidelines for pharma companies engaging in drug trials in India, the government will further amend the Drugs and Cosmetics Act to make lapses by pharma MNCs a punishable offence under law.
