Feud with Sanjay Singh's family over Amethi Palace

Tensions escalated in Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday as the feud within Congress MP and royal Sanjay Singh's family turned violent. A police constable was injured during the clash and he later succumbed to his injuries.

The incident took place after Singh and his second wife Ameeta were not allowed to enter the ancestral property Bhupati Bhawan. The supporters of his first wife Garima Singh's son allegedly prevented the couple from entering the palace.

The mob turned violent and police resorted to lathicharge to contain the situation.

District Magistrate Jagat Raj said, "Police had to resort to mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd, there was no firing from police. Someone from the crowd used a country-made gun to fire at our guards. One constable was injured and he succumbed to his injuries."

Singh's son Vikram who has been in dispute with his father over the palace defended his actions. He said, "We're virtually under house arrest. The phones of our four-five helpers have been confiscated. They threatened us saying that the admin staff will come in and beat us up. The incident has been twisted around, they are saying that the crowd had gathered to stop the Maharaj. I have made it clear from the beginning that the Maharaj is more than welcome here. It is his place. "

Amethi Superintendent of Police Hira Lal said, "Situation is now under control. Sanjay Singh with his family has gone inside his house."
