Union Cabinet clears Land Acquisition Bill - NewsX

The Land Acquisition Bill was yesterday cleared by the Union Cabinet. It makes consent of 80 per cent of people whose land is taken for private projects as mandatory. It strengthens land owners' rights during acquisition for development. The bill is likely to be introduced in Parliament during the final week of the winter session. The Cabinet's approval comes more than a year after Parliament sent the earlier version to a Standing Committee. The previous archaic land acquisition law was coined in the British times and revamped very little thereafter. Because of its arbitratiness and lack of clarity, the nation saw huge controversies erupt after land was acquired.
