Tonight With Deepak Chaurasia: Will BJP change history for RSS?

Come August 14 and all BJP MPs will sport the RSS Shakha Vesh (assembly dress code) – white kurta payjama and a black cap – and line up for a baudhik (lecture) by RSS’ number two, Suresh Bhaiyaji Joshi. It’s not very usual that a top RSS functionary holds such an interaction directly with party MPs.

His address to BJP MPs, in the lawns of the Aurangzeb Road bungalow of parliamentary affairs minister M Venkaiah Naidu, comes at a time when a RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has trigged a controversy by crediting people and ‘not an individual’ for NDA’s return to power at the Centre. The hour-long lecture will be followed by a spread of vegetarian dishes from coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The BJP sought to play down the event saying a central office bearer of the RSS meets party MPs for Gurudakshina every year where MPs contribute to the RSS’s kitty. But a party leader said this was not a Gurudakshina event and attains importance in the backdrop of the BJP’s return to power and Bhagwat’s recent remarks.

“Joshi’s address will mostly be about how the BJP MPs should live up to the expectation of the people who voted for the party like never before,” a BJP leader said.

The RSS brass is walking an extra mile to put in place a mechanism for better coordination between the party, the government and the Sangh to avoid acrimonious scene – a common feature during the previous NDA regime under Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The RSS, which came to the aid of the BJP during the Lok Sabha elections, is understood to be keen to see that elections promises are delivered before a sense of disenchantment sets in. “All this will be reflected in the Sarkaryavah’s (RSS general secretary’s) speech,” another BJP leader said.

23 Lok Sabha MPs and eight others from the Rajya Sabha have been appointed Gatnayaks (group leaders) to coordinate with other MPs to attend the programme – in the prescribed dress code.
