Taliban suicide bombers assaulted a joint US-Afghan air base in eastern Afghanistan this morning sparking a two-hour gun battle... with American helicopters firing down at militants before the attackers were defeated. In what has been described as a "failed attack" by the NATO Military coalition.. at least four Afghan soldiers and 2 civilians were killed.. and NATO troops were left wounded.Taliban insurgents have been battling Nato and Afghan troops for 11 years and still control parts of the east and south. Nato - which currently has some 130,000 troops in Afghanistan - is due to withdraw combat forces in Afghanistan by the end of 2014, with only training troops to remain.
