Cauvery Row: CM's of Karnataka, TN to meet today - NewsX

Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and his Tamil Nadu counterpart Jayalalithaa will meet in Bangalore today on the Cauvery water sharing row. This meet will be held, heeding the Supreme Court advice amid indications that a breakthrough is unlikely. The two leaders are expected to do some hard bargaining and stick to their position on the decades-old vexed dispute, a politically-sensitive issue on both sides of the border. The last time when such a bilateral meeting took place was on January 5, 1997 in Chennai between JH Patel and Karunanidhi. The bilateral talks of 1996-1997 though did not lead to any solution. The two States went back to the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, which itself had been constituted in June 1990 on the directions of the Supreme Court a month earlier.
