At least 20 people have been killed and scores injured in a stampede in the Adalatganj area of Patna during the Chhath Puja celebrations. Reports state that a huge crowd of devotees was moving towards the river Ganga in the evening over a makeshift bamboo bridge when the bridge gave way under them. People in large numbers had gathered to worship on the banks of the river on the occcassion of Chhath. Police and rescue teams reached the spot immediately after the incident and the injured were taken to Patna Medical College hospital. The state government has announced an inquiry into the incident as well as compensation of two lakh rupees for the victims.
