Smog engulfs Delhi; temperature dips - NewsX

A thick blanket of smog has enveloped Delhi for the past two days. This in a sense is a wake-up call for the residents of the capital. The greyish-white 'haze' that has been covering the city is linked to the rapid rise in particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide levels. The heavy smog that has set in earlier than usual and enveloped Delhi like a huge cloak has triggered a rush of respiratory tract infections and other health problems. The smog cover has made life difficult for motorists as the visibility is considerably reduced on the roads. Doctors say that prolonged exposure to smog can trigger asthma attacks even in people who have no history of the problem. Since October 28, when smoggy conditions descended over the city, Delhi has already recorded 91 hours of below 1,000 m visibility.
