SAD to stage dharna in front of Sonia Gandhi's residence

The issue of separate gurdwara body for Haryana is set to snowball into a big battle between Shiromani Akali Dal (B) and Congress as Punjab's ruling party and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) have decided to stage a dharna in front of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's residence at 10 Janpath on Friday.
Haryana assembly had passed a bill for forming a separate gurdwara body on July 12 and the governor had cleared it on July 15, angering the SAD and Sikh's supreme temporal body Akal Takht, which excommunicated three Haryana leaders for initiating the "divide".
president of DSGMC, Manjit Singh GK, who is also president of SAD (B)'s Delhi unit, said, "We are of the view that Congress has conspired with a few anti-Panthic elements in Haryana and created a split in the SGPC, which is intolerable. As a first step, we have decided to sit in front of 10 Janpath to make Sonia Gandhi hear the pain, agony and anger of Sikhs".
DSGMC also questioned as to why Haryana's Bhupinder Singh Hooda government was in a haste to pass the HSGPC bill, ahead of assembly elections. "Three states and a Union territory are involved in the issue and Hooda government used extra-constitutional powers to pass the bill," he said.
"Instead of soothing the wounds of Sikhs after Operation Bluestar and 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Congress always rubbed salt into our wounds. Dividing the SGPC is Congress's latest assault on Sikh power," GK said.
"We will oppose HSGPC legally, politically, religiously and will not hesitate about taking to roads," he added.
Youth Akali Dal president of Delhi unit of SAD (B) and MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, "We are ready for a long battle and will generate momentum for it."
He said hundreds of Sikhs had laid their lives and thousands were put behind bars for the formation of SGPC. "The struggle for gurdwara reforms, led by the SAD from 1920 to 1925, forced British rulers to come up with Gurdwara Act and management of all gurdwaras were handed over to Sikhs," he said.
"Congress has proved worse than the British. I warn Sonia Gandhi to desist from meddling in the religious affairs of Sikhs," said GK.
