The BJP is reportedly making attempts to stake claim to form government in Delhi, which has been under President's Rule for the last six months. Sources said senior BJP leader Jagdish Mukhi will be the party's candidate for chief minister.

While officially the party has denied any such move, sources said the Delhi unit is now only waiting for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to return from his foreign tour.

At the moment the BJP is five short of a majority in the Delhi Assembly.

Arvind Kejriwal of the Aam Aadmi Party has used radio ad spots and Twitter to accuse the BJP of trying to buy MLAs.

"After failing to buy any AAP MLA, BJP now trying to buy 6 cong MLAs. Price - Rs. 20 crores each, 2 ministers and 4 chairmen (sic)," Mr Kejriwal tweeted today.

The BJP's Delhi chief Satish Upadhyay dismissed those charges and challenged Mr Kejriwal to prove his allegations.

The AAP has 27 MLAs in Delhi. In January this year, after the BJP said it could not form government, Mr Kejriwal became chief minister with the external support of the Congress' eight MLAs. That partnership, shaky from the beginning, came apart 49 days later, when the AAP government resigned.

The Congress, faced with disquieting reports that some of its MLAs have been in talks to break away, has made clear that action will be taken against any party member who tries to defect.
In elections held last December the BJP had won 31 seats and its ally, the Akali Dal, had won one. At 32, they were four short of the majority mark at 36.

But three BJP MLAs contested and won the general elections in May - including the party's first choice for Chief Minister Harsh Vardhan, who is now Health Minister at the Centre.
