Nithyananda sacked as Madurai mutt successor - NewsX

Controversial godman Nityananda was sacked as the head of the Madurai Adheenam yesterday. The Madurai Adheenam is a 1,500-year old Saivaite mutt in Tamil Nadu that found itself in the middle of a widespread condemnation over the appointment of Nityananda. The senior pontiff Sri Arunagirinathar had named Nityananda his successor in April. But thereafter he has been facing pressure from the state government, Hindu mutts and even devotees against the appointment. Nithyananda is facing criminal charges, including that of rape, in Karnataka. A US-based woman and some others have alleged sexual exploitation, a charge that he has denied.
