Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency Varanasi will now receive 24 hours power supply. Ending days of speculations that the temple town was in for big sops from the state government, UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav directed energy department officials to ensure round the clock power supply to the city, on Monday.

The move comes amidst a raging row between Centre and state over poor power situation in Uttar Pradesh.

The demand for 24 hours power supply was raised during a protest led by BJP MLA from Varanasi south, Shyam Deo Roy Chaudhary, sitting on indefinite fast. On Monday, Chaudhary and former Lucknow MP Lalji Tandon met Akhilesh with demand to put the city's power supply on top priority list and it was fulfilled.
