Maharashtra's multi-crore irrigation scam is all set to hot up further. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has cleared a departmental enquiry against 45 senior officials of the Vidarbha Irrigation Development Council including that of its former director DP Shirke. The officials were indicted in the ND Vadnere committee report in 2010 and a departmental enquiry pending for the past two years. Several engineer including Shirke, will now face probe on several counts including non-adherence to government norms while clearing cost escalation, not supervising works on site and not following tender conditions.
Nationalist Congress Party leader and party chief Sharad Pawar's nephew, Ajit Pawar had resigned late last month after being charged with giving clearances to as many as 32 irrigation projects without VIDC's approval.
