Fighting the tide is a NewsX special show which brings you a story of unique 'Jal Satyagraha' protest by Omkareshwar dam protesters. To control the water level in Narmada, which is flowing above the danger levels, Madhya Pradesh government had ordered opening all the gates of Omkareshwar dam. The move will eventually leave 30 villages made of 4,000 families submerged in water. Villagers in Khandwa stated unique protest to stall the Madhya Pradesh government's move to raise the water level at the Omkareshwar Dam. Villagers carried out a dramatic' Jal Satyagraha' where they had immersed themselves in almost neck deep water for 17 days. Protesters say that according to Supreme Court judgment, the state government should have rehabilitated them, six months before taking any such step. On the 17th day, the Madhya Pradesh government has finally blinked to their demands. Madhya Pradesh chief minister said that the water level would be scaled down to 189 metres from the present 190.5 metres, besides giving compensation for affected farmers.
