The mode of projecting smoking as injurious to health in Bollywood films and on TV, is set to undergo a shift. The government has told the Supreme Court that it would shortly issue a notification to permit smoking scenes in films in place of the earlier blanket ban. The notification lays down certain conditions. The films showing a smoking scene carry a minimum 30 second anti-tobacco health spot or promo with the actor at the start middle and end of the film. Also, there will be a scroll that smoking is injurious during the course of the scene showing smoking. The brands of cigarettes and other tobacco products will have to be blurred. The filmmaker must also give a valid explanation for the need of the smoking scene. The film will get a U/A certificate.
