Will Mumbaikars get to travel on the much-awaited Metro starting this Sunday?

Sources in the know said services on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor, that is, Phase I of the Metro, would begin on Sunday, though there was no official confirmation from the operator, Mumbai Metro One Private Ltd (MMOPL) or the state agency, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

"The R-Infra-promoted MMOPL is all geared up to start commercial operations on Sunday. Since it is a holiday, the passenger count will be low, but it would be enough to help iron out minor issues before Monday, when the crowds are expected to increase considerably," sources said.

BJP MPs from the city Kirit Somaiya and Gopal Shetty, in fact, said they would not wait for Sunday. Alleging that the state government was delaying operations, they claimed they would board the Metro from Ghatkopar at 3 pm on Saturday to inaugurate it.
