India News Exclusive: Straight talk with Varanasi Congress leader Rajesh Mishra

The Congress party appears stuck without many options. Caste calculations in Varanasi suggest fielding a Brahmin candidate against Modi may be advantageous. Election results in the past show Brahmin candidates have done well. In 2004, for instance, Rajesh Kumar Mishra won on a Congress ticket with a margin of over 2 lakh votes. In 2009, though, Mishra dropped to the fourth position. The Congress has also co-opted Ajay Rai, the upper caste Bhumihar who ranked third in 2009, into the Congress field. But Rai neither fits the bill on the caste combination front, nor when it comes to matching up to Modi's much-hyped persona.
