A revelation by the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Health and Family Welfare on the safety of the medicines we consume is shocking indeed. The report reveals how Country's highest office on drugs monitoring, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, has been approving medicines without subjecting it to mandatory clinical trials. The report shows that between January 2008 and October 2010, as many as 33 new medicines were approved without them having undergone human trials. Along with this, in a separate scrutiny of 39 randomly picked drugs, it was found that 11 drugs had not been subjected to the mandatory phase III clinical trials. Interestingly, some of these drugs belong to reputed firms like Novartis, Cipla and Eli Lilly.
