After Jaswant Singh, Uma Bharti joins the rebellion
  • 5 years ago
Bhopal is the new hotseat for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) it seems. After party veteran LK Advani showed interest in the seat, Uma Bharti has now reportedly told the party leadership that she will like to contest from there.
Uma Bharti has always been a powerful figure in Madhya Pradesh politics. She is the one who ended Congress leader Digvijaya Singh's ten years of rule in the state. But she had to quit in mid-2004 after a local court in Hubli in Karnataka summoned her in connection with the 1994 Idgah Maidan communal clash. After this, her downfall in Madhya Pradesh politics started.
Her rival Shivraj Singh Chouhan took over as the chief minister in 2005 and Uma left the BJP to start her own party. Her party, however, failed to take off and she returned to the BJP via neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.
